Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) have long held a critical role in ensuring accessible, high-quality maternity care across diverse communities. As the CPM profession continues to grow and evolve, so does our responsibility to maintain and communicate a comprehensive, consistent framework for quality, education, practice, and ethics.  This month, NACPM is proud to introduce the Certified Professional Midwives Framework—a comprehensive document that defines the foundational elements of the CPM credential. This framework aims to clarify the current foundational elements of the CPM credential. It serves as an essential guide for all who are involved in or impacted by midwifery care: aspiring and practicing CPMs, educational institutions, the public, policy makers, and other stakeholders in the healthcare system. In presenting this framework, NACPM hopes to foster an in-depth understanding of the CPM credential, outline the responsibilities and standards required of CPMs, and identify areas within our field that may benefit from further collaboration and development. NACPM believes that such transparency is crucial, not only to uphold the integrity of the  profession but also to invite constructive dialogue that will ultimately enhance the quality and sustainability of CPM practice. As members of the midwifery community, NACPM is committed to highlighting that our credential reflects the highest standards of competency, ethics, and care. Recognizing that this commitment requires continuous examination and adaptation to meet the evolving needs of those we serve. REGISTER NOW Advocating for Midwifery in Washington, DC Cassaundra Jah, Executive Director of NACPM, recently visited Washington, DC, as part of a collaborative advocacy effort alongside the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), American Association of Birth Centers (AABC), Birth Center Equity (BCE), and the Policy Institute for Community Birth. This unified coalition is taking turns visiting the hill to champion three critical federal bills: the Midwives for Service Members Act, the Midwives for Moms Act, and the BABIES Act. These bills offer practical solutions that cross political divides by expanding midwifery education, increasing access to credentialed midwifery care for military families, and strengthening birth center infrastructure. With proven success in improving maternal health outcomes, we are confident that policymakers will recognize their value. During the visit, NACPM and partners also discussed the timelines for appropriations portals and emphasized the importance of continued Title VII and VIII funding to support the midwifery workforce and enhance maternal healthcare access nationwide. This advocacy effort underscores NACPM’s commitment to advancing policies that support midwives and the families they serve. Stay tuned for more updates on our federal initiatives! Georgia Midwives Leading the Way in Advocacy and Education NACPM is thrilled to celebrate the incredible work happening in Georgia as midwives, students, and advocates push forward in their fight for direct-entry midwifery licensure. On February 5, 50 dedicated advocates gathered at the Capitol to lobby for midwifery licensure. With the bill expected to emerge from legislative council any day now, we look forward to seeing it move to committee hearings soon! March Birth Expo – This upcoming event will feature a panel of perinatal providers speaking in support of home birth, bringing awareness and momentum to the midwifery licensure effort. Quarterly Skills Day Recap – On February 1, Georgia midwives and students came together for a transformative day of hands-on learning. Washington Midwives Secure Key Legislative Wins NACPM celebrates the success of Washington Midwife Lobby Day, where 60+ midwifery advocates met with lawmakers in 80+ meetings to advance midwifery care. Thanks to sustained advocacy, Licensed Midwives continue to save $2,500 annually through the licensing fee cap—a policy secured for over 15 years! Legislative Win: HB 1824 Advances! HB 1824, eliminating duplicate birth center inspections, passed the Healthcare Committee unanimously (19-0) and now moves to the Rules Committee, skipping a fiscal review.
